An institution of Brazilian metal, KORZUS was founded 35 years ago in São Paulo and, despite various line up changes, has worked uninterruptedly since October, 1983. After taking part of the legendary compilation “SP Metal 2” (1985) and releasing “Korzus Ao Vivo” (1985), came the first studio album, “Sonho Maníaco” (1987). With some classic tracks up their sleeve such as the eternal anthem “Guerreiros do Metal” and aiming for the most aggressive sound possible, always guided by thrash metal standards, the band then aimed higher.
Besides the line up changes, the band also switched to English. Two years after their first experience with the EP “Pay For Your Lies”, they recorded “Mass Illusion” (1991) considered one of the great classics of the style in Brazil. Including the classic track “Agony”, also released as a video clip, the album allowed for the first overseas tour in countries such as Italy, Germany, France, Austria and England.
Looking ahead without, however, disowning past achievements, new changes came during the KZS (1995) phase, when the band once again toured Europe and also visited the EUA. These changes could have slowed down their momentum but weren’t capable of putting a stop to the band’s dream. The group didn’t let up and went on playing, with emphasis to their participation at the “Monsters of Rock” festival that gave origin to the live album “2000 – Live at Monsters of Rock”.
The wait for a new studio album was rewarded with the release of “Ties of Blood” (2004). The material became the band’s new classic, at the time counting with the original members Marcello Pompeu (vocals), Silvio Golfetti (guitar) and Dick Siebert (bass), besides Heros Trench (guitar) and Rodrigo Oliveira (drums). The album that included tracks such “Guilty Silence”, “Screaming for Death” and “Evil Sight”, also counted with the presence of Andreas Kisser (Sepultura), Andre Matos (Shaman, Angra and Viper), João Gordo and Boka (Ratos de Porão), as well as the late Hélcio Aguirra (Golpe de Estado, Harppia). By the way, Kisser was temporarily substituted by Golfetti in Sepultura in a 1991 tour when he broke his arm.
Two years later the first DVD, “Video História”, was released followed by further line up changes. The line up was finally completed with the arrival of Antonio Araujo (guitar, former ChaoSphere). The official debut of the musician from Recife (PE) happened in 2008. Two years later they recorded the album “Discipline of Hate” (2010). Recorded, mixed and mastered at Mr. Som by Heros Trench and Marcello Pompeu – winners of a Latin Grammy – the album, that counted with a special guest appearance by Zoltan Farkas of Ektomorf, was released world wide by German label AFM Records.
With the “Discipline of Hate Tour”, performing the most recent highlights such as “Truth”, “Raise Your Soul”, “My Enemy” and “Never Die”, the band traveled through Austria, Switzerland and Germany besides playing throughout Brazil where they also performed at the legendary Rock In Rio on September 25th, 2011.
Tight and always working in a meticulous and detailed manner, the band went back to the studio and released “Legion” in 2014. This album was responsible for new anthems such as the title track and “Lifeline”. Moreover, the album counts with the participation of guitarist and former member Marcelo ‘Soldado’ Nejem on the track “Six Seconds” and of guitarist Edu Ardanuy (former Dr. Sin, Anjos da Noite, A Chave/The Key among others) on the solo of “Time Has Come”.
Their career spans thirty five years. From the past, when the band bore the nickname “Brazilian Slayer”, Korzus created their own identity, established their personality and became one of the biggest names of Brazilian metal. Much of this is due to their live performances since the band – now preparing the successor to “Legion” – gives their best to deliver the best show possible. Be certain of one thing: you will never witness an average live performance. Marcello Pompeu (vocals), Heros Trench and Antonio Araujo (guitars), Dick Siebert (bass) and Rodrigo Oliveira (drums) are on the road to prove that.
Why Korzus?
The makeshift name of the band was Mão do Destino (Hand of Doom), and would be used at the “1st Musical Encounter of the Costa Braga School”. Obviously it was inspired by the Black Sabbath song, one of the band’s references along with Slayer, Judas Priest and Motörhead. By the way, Sabbath received two tributes from Korzus: a version of “Under The Sun”, recorded on the EP “Pay For Your Lies”; and “Neon Knights”, released in the tribute “Sabbath Brazil Sabbath” (2018).
With no specific meaning, the name Korzus was literally taken from the closet door of the late drummer Zema. The word, originally taken from a horror movie, was the nickname of Marcos Kekas, guitarist of the band Ethan. With the intention of finding a strong and impacting name, the then beginner group “borrowed” the name to play at a festival in December 1983 and was forever etched in the history of Brazilian metal. “It’s the love for metal. Only the strong follow down this road. We’re persistent, survivors and metal warriors forever”, says Dick Siebert, responsible for the creation of the band’s logo and backdrops. This Korzus has already proven several times.
